The Savage Is Loose (1974) Poster

vii /10

I saw this motion picture in 1974

when it came out. I was 20 years onetime (I am now 51 years old). I've never forgotten this movie in all these years. Now looking dorsum, this was a subject area matter that took a lot of guts to bear upon way back then. Heck, incest would be a touchy subject area matter even now! I saw it with my 2 sisters and I recall walking out of the movie 31 years ago just dumbstruck. Wow, what a story! I've never seen it in video stores and take never heard anything about information technology nor accept I ever met anyone else that saw it back then when I did. (What did nosotros exercise before the Net?) If you ever get the risk to run across it, exercise. I wouldn't watch it with whatsoever children under the age of 18. Information technology'south pretty graphic from what I can recollect. And the ending, well, you just accept to see it.

Thank God for video stores going out of concern.

Upon taking a terminal cursory glance at the dusty back shelves of a semi-local video store going out of business, already with an armful of moldy oldies such as "Firm on the Edge of the Park" and "Slime Metropolis" (at five bucks a slice), I caught sight of this long out of print study in Oedipal politics set on a jungle island where a immature boy, taught to obey the rules of the wild, discovers that his only sexual partner is his sexy mother. So it'due south a battle of wills between he and his father to decide who, every bit Lou Reed said, tin "bag their beloved Large Bird."

It's non anywhere near as kinky equally it sounds; More often than not this takes the high dramatic road, and pulls it off reasonably well, although much of it'due south intentions are dampened by George C. Scott'south inert direction.

On a concluding notation, I would like to point out that I put down an original video copy of Larry Cohen's "It's Alive" to purchase this ane. Think I made the right pick?

Yeah I thought so.

A needlessly ugly film

Warning: Spoilers

An ugly piddling film with no reason to be ugly. Let's apply some logic here. In circumstances such as these, if there were absolutely no other women around except his female parent, it is quite likely, perchance fifty-fifty understandable, that a young man would beginning to develop sexual feelings for her. Instead of truly examining this, the film opts instead for completely unsympathetic characters, including portraying the young man equally a wild animal (the "savage" of the championship) who plots to impale his father and rape his mother. Squeamish, eh? The filmmakers might have fabricated their point ameliorate (bold they were trying to make a point at all) past adding a little sympathy to anybody's plight. Maybe they could have had the boyfriend feel some horror over his desire for his female parent? Perchance mom could accept aching over whether or non she owes something to her son under these farthermost atmospheric condition? Whatsoever of this would have fabricated for a amend movie. Instead, the boy is a stalking predator while mom runs effectually the movie shrieking nigh how fearful she is of him. Besides bad; at that place was promising field of study matter here, boldly ignored by George C. Scott and writers Max Ehrlich and Frank De Felitta. A existent waste.

unforgettable movie

I really liked this movie when I saw information technology YEARS ago. Like others I have never forgot it. I have searched for "barbarous" (I forgot the title)for a long time. Not for children for sure. Rather erotic esp for the times. I would buy the VHS if I could find it. I was not a prude when I first saw the moving-picture show but I call back beingness slightly shocked by the content. I enjoyed the survival aspect of the movie. Georgia Scott would have to work hard to make a bad motion-picture show in my opinion. Looking for a copy of "The Saveage is Loose". I tin non remember the mother/wife in the moving-picture show just I do recall that she was rather hot. There were several "surprise" moments in the movie including the ending that I would not want to requite away. If you haven't seen it and are rather open minded, do your self a favor and find it, and if yous practice please tell me where you found it.

Ludicrous & a consummate disaster

This is one of the worst movies I've always endured & 90% of the arraign goes to the arrogance of the manager & star, George C Scott. The rest of the arraign goes to the scriptwriter'south unbelievably bad screen writing. Equally the ii hours drag on for what seems an eternity, nothing happens except a sex activity showdown betwixt the begetter's & the son'southward sex urges for wife & mother! The son could've just masturbated. The unabridged product is seedy, ridiculous & unbearable. Giving information technology i star is the best that can ge said for it. Avert @ all cost unless you are a masochist who'due south into incest.

Memorable

I watched this pic when I was very immature -- perhaps 12; it was either a Goggle box or cablevision film then. Taped it, and had information technology for years. I sympathize with the other reviewer who said he showed it to his Taiwanese date -- my wife is Taiwanese, and somehow, I don't remember she would like it either, though not due to prudishness. She's just not into savages, Tarzan-similar figures, or Christianity. I did similar this film when I was a child -- and well into my 20s, but have non seen it since then (now in my later 40s). Yet, I however remember almost of it vividly. Kudos to George C. Scott -- and I am very sorry for him that the motion picture did not practise improve, but also I am in no mode surprised. Many out-on-a-limb worthy efforts fail to win over the majority of viewers. (I recall my grandmother saying she walked out of A Clockwork Orange when she somehow went to see it in the theater in the early on '70s -- and I loved that film too; still do.) I wonder how Brutal would do now, if information technology were released on DVD in expert quality. I would propose seeing it, peculiarly to younger people with imagination, marvel, and a capacity for deep thought. (I could not lookout Scott in Twenty-four hours of the Dolphin, however -- not due to any acting problem, but because that film struck me as terribly heartrending -- I felt desperately for the dolphins.) This one didn't problem me a bit, except I wondered what would come next at the end.

Exploring Eternal Human Behavior

This movie provides a family unit the ground for discussions regarding eternal human behavior usually incommunicable to brainstorm with teenagers, male and female person. While not a "remake" of Oedipus, teenagers volition better understand the essence of their tensions from this experience.

Y'all are warned to view this movie first as parents without the siblings. Then, if you are prepared to begin the transition of establishing an open up relationship with your teenagers at an adult, non parental, level, view information technology together.

Obscure for good reasons

Warning: Spoilers

This vanity project for actor George C. Scott (who not simply starred in the film, just directed, produced, and acted as its benefactor) has been pretty much forgotten today, with no signs that it will exist resurrected on DVD or Blu-ray. There'due south a skilful reason for that... brand that a number of reasons why. Certainly the discipline matter - incest - volition make it unappealing for many people, just also how information technology is handled. If yous are looking for sleazy thrills, you'll be very disappointed; while the film got an "R" rating, by today's standards (or even normal 1970s standards), the movie is more than deserving of a soft "PG" rating. Information technology instead tries to be a more thoughtful and serious take on the hot-topic subject affair, but it fails in this regard as well. It's incredibly ho-hum and long (almost two hours long), with a limited amount of dialogue. As a issue, the motion-picture show becomes both very boring and defective in deep character development. Scott the manager tin't seem to practice anything to add any spark to the express narrative or the atmosphere, with the exception of some really amateurish camera movements hither and there. If you really desire to sentry this obscurity, as of this date information technology'due south available on YouTube. But more probable than non yous'll want to fall comatose before the end, as I well-nigh did.

Bad date movie

Warning: Spoilers

Going through the movie listings for a good flick to bring a date to I saw George C. Scott...wow! My date was a very conservative young lady from Taiwan, that took nearly a month to get permission to date. I was stunned at the subject field material of this film, Incest, Masturbation, Murdering a father to have sexual practice with his mother. The plot takes off at that bad-mannered point in Swiss Family Robinson where Mrs. Robinson brings up the fact they have three sons on an island with no other women, then goes straight for a pervert fantasy plot line. This movie should take been rated X at that time. This was truly a "auto crash" spectacle, no one could expect elsewhere. We couldn't believe what we were seeing. I read somewhere that Scott was embarrassed of this film, I might add that he had amend have been. This was non what I expected in my wildest nightmares. First date-Terminal engagement...period.
